Senior educationist and social reformer Prof. Sachchidanand Yadav, who has dedicated his life to fostering social harmony through integrity, courage, and positive social initiatives, has been selected for the Shyampriya Samman 2025.
The announcement to institute the Shyampriya Samman was made last year by the Shyampriya Center for Social Harmony, located in Tengaraha. The award celebrates lifelong commitment to social responsibility and harmony.
About the Shyampriya Samman
The Shyampriya Samman is dedicated to individuals who have devoted their lives to establishing diversity, inclusion, and social justice in society.
The institution believes that India’s rich cultural, social, and linguistic diversity becomes a true strength only when it is anchored in the values of harmony, equal opportunity, and participation.
A Pioneer of the Literacy Movement in Bihar
Prof. Sachchidanand Yadav’s contributions to education and literacy have been inspirational not only for Bihar but for the entire nation.
Around 1990, when the literacy rate in Madhepura district stood at an extremely low level of approximately 35 percent, and Bihar was counted among the least literate states in the country, he resolved to transform literacy into a people’s movement.
Today, according to estimates, Bihar’s literacy rate stands at approximately 70 percent — a remarkable transformation over the decades.
Madhepura and the Total Literacy Campaign
In 1991, under the National Literacy Mission, Madhepura was selected as one of the first experimental districts for the Total Literacy Campaign in Bihar.
Prof. Yadav played a pivotal leadership role in this campaign. Through his tireless efforts, the light of literacy reached villages and households across the district, awakening new educational consciousness among marginalized communities.
